Dianne Higgins
Stained Glass Mosaic Artist
Di Higgins has pursued an interest in the Visual Arts from a young age. She majored in Art as part of her tertiary studies, and has completed a wide variety of short courses using a range of different media and art forms. For some years, she enjoyed working with pastels to make animal portraits on commission, particularly horses and dogs. However, a basic short course in mosaic-making created an on-going and all-consuming passion for working with stained glass. Di has experimented with a wide range of techniques using glass, and has completed works such as landscapes, seascapes, abstracts, decorative mirrors, and mandalas. In September 2013, she participated in a two-day portrait workshop with celebrated American mosaic artist, Carol Shelkin, and began her journey with portraits of people and animals. Since that time, she has created over 30 portraits. She enjoys experimenting with the use of colour, and creating a realistic but also stylized version of her subjects. She has developed a recognizable style and demonstrates a talent for exposing the emotions of the subject. Di regards herself as a painter, with stained glass as her preferred medium. She has won prizes for her mosaics at the Royal Melbourne Show, Living and Learning Portrait Competition, and at the recent Yakkerboo Art Festival. Di held her first solo exhibition at the Libran Dogma Gallery in Narre Warren North, in July 2014.
Di lives with her partner, two teenage girls, two dogs and a cat, in Berwick, a picturesque suburb of Melbourne. She works full time as a teacher, and spends her spare time creating beautiful mosaics, for herself, for sale, or on commission. She is a member of many different mosaic groups on the web, which enables her to share work, ideas, inspiration, solutions, and support with other mosaic artists from all over the world.
